Here's a site that has very thorough info on the use and care of cast iron skillets: http://whatscookingamerica.net/Information/CastIronPans.htm . I do soak my skillet in the sink full of soapy water. Oops! I dry rinse it thoroughly and then put on the stove to heat it up to get it good and dry. I hardly ever season mine and have never had a problem. I will rub it lightly with vegetable oil and then stick it in the oven for a bit when I am cooking something else. Not sure if that's the "right" way or not - I just do what my mom did. And my skillet is still going mighty strong after 20 years!

As a newly-wed, I did receive the holy grail of cooking - the cast iron skillet. Any recommendations on how to season the baby up?

I think I will have to go and get me one of those! The only cast iron thing have at home is a lovely little teapot that I truly love, but it just weighs so much!

My Mom gave me her old one and I love it, It has come in handy many times and been threatened to use for things other than intended. No, just joshin ya, but seriously when I start to talk like that, my peeps listen up!
My favorite is "fryin chicken" but that peach pie, you just inspired me!

This is great, I had no idea you could bake a pie in a skillet! For years I've dropped hints to get an extra iron skillet from my grandmother's collection. Her cornbread she makes in it is to die for, I tell you.

Maybe I should search some flea markets...
